HUMBLE BEGINNINGS IN ROME, NEW YORK
The foundation of Capital Tile & Marble Co., Inc. is deeply rooted in family, tradition, and hands-on craftsmanship. The story begins in 1959, when Tom Trento, just 12 years old, began working alongside his father, Frank Trento, in the tile trade in Rome, New York. These early years laid the groundwork for what would become a lifelong dedication to precision, hard work, and the art of tile installation.
After graduating high school, Tom joined the tile setters’ union in Central New York and began a formal apprenticeship. His strong work ethic and skill quickly moved him from laborer to seasoned mechanic. During that time, Tom refined his craft and taught several friends who shared his passion for the trade. Many of those friends later brought those lessons to New Hampshire and Vermont, planting the seeds of a future network.
A NEW OPPORTUNITY IN NEW ENGLAND
In the early to mid-1980s, Tom frequently traveled to New England, subcontracting tile work with the same acquaintances he had mentored years earlier. The steady demand for skilled tile work and the sense of opportunity in the region led Tom and his wife to act. In 1988, the couple relocated to the Manchester, New Hampshire area, intent on building something of their own.
CAPITAL TILE & MARBLE IS BORN
In 1989, with little more than two pickup trucks and a two-stall garage, Tom and Jackie Trento launched Capital Tile & Marble Co., Inc. What started as a modest family operation quickly gained momentum, driven by Tom’s experience, Jackie’s support, and growing demand for tile.
Soon after opening, Tom and Jackie were joined by their son Todd Trento, nephew Greg Paquette, and a team of skilled tradespeople. They all shared the family’s values of craftsmanship, honesty, and reliability. Capital Tile was officially in business—with a strong foundation and a clear mission.
From the beginning, the company focused on commercial tile and high-end residential projects. They earned a reputation for exceptional work and dependable service across southern New Hampshire and northern New England.
EXPANDING THE FAMILY BUSINESSOF CAPITAL TILE
In 1992, Tom’s eldest son, Vincent Trento, joined the company. He worked in the field and the office as an estimator. Vincent helped streamline operations while maintaining the hands-on quality that set Capital Tile apart.
As the company grew, it thrived thanks to the leadership of the Trento family and trusted industry professionals. This included Steve Tripp, Ron Lacey, and others who became key to the company’s continued growth.
THE LAUNCH OF RUMFORD STONE
With success came new opportunities. Recognizing the growing demand for premium stone fabrication, the Trento family launched a complementary venture—Rumford Stone—as a spin-off of the original tile business. Built with the same commitment to quality and service, Rumford Stone has since grown into one of the largest and most respected stone fabrication shops in northern New England, serving both residential and commercial markets with custom countertops, vanities, and other stone surfaces.
The synergy between Capital Tile and Rumford Stone created a seamless offering for clients who wanted beautifully integrated tile and stonework—often managed as coordinated, collaborative projects between the two companies.
THE CAPITAL TILE SHIFT TOWARD RESIDENTIAL EXCELLENCE
As Capital Tile & Marble evolved with the times, so did its focus. In response to changing demand for personalized, design-forward spaces, the company shifted from commercial installations to residential tile work. This strategic move let the team apply their technical expertise to detailed projects where artistry and craftsmanship truly shine. Capital Tile collaborates with discerning homeowners, custom builders, and designers to deliver elegant tile and porcelain panel installations across New Hampshire.
From intricate backsplashes and spa-like showers to classic flooring, each space shows precision, craftsmanship, and thoughtful design. Known for transforming kitchens, bathrooms, entryways, and living areas, the company approaches every job with high standards. This residential focus has also strengthened Capital Tile’s relationship with its sister company, Rumford Stone. The two businesses often collaborate on integrated projects, giving clients convenience and the confidence of a unified tile and stone team.
STEWARDSHIP AND LEGACY
In 2015, after decades of building and leading the business, Tom and Jackie Trento retired, passing the torch to their sons, Todd and Vincent Trento. Today, Todd and Vincent continue to run Capital Tile & Marble Co., Inc. and Rumford Stone. They carry forward the same values instilled by their parents and grandfather—integrity, craftsmanship, and a dedication to excellence. The businesses remain family-owned and operated, blending old-world skill with modern techniques and materials. The team continues to invest in training, innovation, and customer relationships to ensure Capital Tile stays a trusted name.
